FOR STUDENTS UNDER THE GUN!
My name is Alex Russell. I'm a copyeditor. For more about me in general, here's my main page. This page is information for students who only need good light or medium editing on school papers and want to be sure right away that they've found someone they can afford. You have!
Light editing - $3 per page
Medium editing - $4 per page
What is light editing? A light edit only goes through and finds/fixes typos and mechanical stuff that's definitely broken: spelling, punctuation, grammar, capitalization, wrong word usage. Also it looks at whether the way you use words is consistent throughout the paper. Any other issues are untouched. This is for when you just want to avoid shooting yourself in the foot with basic mistakes.
What is medium editing? A medium edit includes all of the above -- and some very important additional things. I'll point out or fix awkward grammatical constructions and poor word choices. I will flag murky, confusing paragraphs and flow issues and will often suggest ways to untangle them. I'll ask about gaps in clarity. This is for when you need your paper to read well. (It's usually the wisest choice, but sometimes people may just want a light edit because of time pressures or for other reasons.)
If you want a higher level of editing than that, as with an important paper -- if you want me to go line by line and work with you to help your paper speak -- then we'll need to talk about it, as discussed in the Rates section of my main page. I'll need to see a sample, and we'll work out a rate. But, for just ordinary light and medium editing on student work, I see no reason to make things hard.

Here's how we do it:
1. You have your draft completed. You email me, ask if I can help you, and explain what you need.
You describe the piece of writing. You can even attach the file if you wish (for longer papers, it's a good idea to send it at this stage so that I can get a better idea).
You tell me which level of edit you want.
And you tell me when you need it by.
If you will need your paper to conform to a specific style guide required by the instructor or the department, etc., I'll need to know that too.
2. I'll answer as soon as I read your email.
Wait till I answer. (For the love of everything, don't just rush down and pay me without waiting.)
Remember, I will not be able to accept an editing assignment if I'm not sure that I will be able to get it done and my other commitments done when promised or required! I may be busy. If I am, I'll regretfully tell you that I can't do your edit in the time you need.
If, in my email, I tell you that I will do the job as described, you then do BOTH of the following:
3a. Email me the file as an attachment. (Even if you already sent it to me, send it to me again; it eliminates possible confusion.)
3b. Pay me in advance. (Because I don't want collection problems over school papers; I'm making this smooth for students, so I want it smooth in return. And with a per-page rate it's pretty simple.)
Calculate the number of pages you have. A page is 250 words for editing-rate purposes, so divide your word count by 250.
Click the PayPal button at the bottom of this page. Select the proper editing level, then, when you get to the Shopping Cart, enter the proper number of pages. Pay.
If you have any trouble with this, email me about the problem.
4. When I see that I've got the document, and that you've paid me and that it's the right amount, I'll promptly edit your document and email it back to you. Even if it was only a light edit, always look the document over once more yourself after you get it back! A medium edit will definitely need your attention.
5. I can't guarantee a good grade, of course; that's up to you. Just a decently edited paper. And, if you like what I did for you, I hope you'll tell other students you know an editor they can use! (And that you'll use me again.)

Sound simple?
One last note: Remember to also say in your email how you'd like me to work. A very efficient route is to use the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word. I usually work this way; I recommend it. If you're not comfortable using that, we can work out something else. I can also mark up printed pages by hand, but in that case getting the manuscript back and forth will be a little more complicated.
IN THAT CASE, THE BUSINESS END
Contact me here first: flugendorf@yahoo.com
Then, when we've defined the job and I've agreed to do it, use this form to choose the proper editing level, and then when you get to the Shopping Cart give the number of pages, rounding to the nearest. Then just make sure you get your work to me! |
